Randy, born Randolph Lincoln IIIrd, is an American student studying "Celtic Mysticism of Welsh Culture" arrives at the Price home after seeing an vacancy advertisement for a lodger.

 

An extremely educated and intelligent character who winds Gwynne up a treat with his anecdotes and constant lectures. However, Idris is his bedroom and bed-sharing best friend. Randy strives to teach Idris some basic principles as they stay up endless nights chatting about life, Randy's love life and how men should be 'men' etc.

 

The entirety of first season episodes ended with a scene consisting of Idris and Randy sharing their views before the old man tells him to "dout the light son". Here we get the moral of the story and the reminiscing on the days events etc. The third series ends with Idris telling Randy to "dout the light" again, but this time he's outside and fighting for his place in the Price household after neglecting them to move in with Mandy.

 

Randy spent a lot of time with the Hopi and regularly still practises as a Hopi. He has gained a lot of experience and intelligence from their religion and knows of many remedies for the hardest of problems. He even knew a cure to prevent Gwynne's death, however his conscious took over as it more that often does with Randy, and he refuses to carry it out as it may result in another death to someone else.

 

The entire series was built around the arrival of Randy the American in the village of Satellite City.
