Thick Cut

- Originally Aired: BBC2W Tuesday 22nd August 2006

Boyd Clacks' latest project is a collection of short-films named 'Thick Cut'. A ground breaking collection of sketches and monologues that delve into the "dark underbelly" of comedy.

Thick Cut recently aired for just twelve minutes at the end of a night of pure tribute to the work of the genius that is, Mr. Boyd Clack. Digital channel BBC2W devoted an entire evening showcasing and celebrating the works of Mr. Clack. With a documentary and Boyd's pick of the best episodes of Satellite City and High Hopes, Thick Cut ended the two hour tribute.

Boyd has been working closely with co-writer Kirsten Jones in order to bring a sketch show that was a breath of fresh air to Welsh audiences. With similarities to 'Little Britain'; where the sketches portray real people and real circumstances, and with characters that bear resemblance to Ricky Gervais' David Brent of 'The Office' fame, Thick Cut goes boldly into a black and sometimes sarcastic comedy with very interesting results.

Much to his delight Boyd Clack took on more of an acting role for the show than he has shown in recent years (really only playing small parts in High Hopes), he takes us through the stories of six different characters and their comic predicaments, sometimes giving a dark insight to the harsh realities of peoples personalities and lives. Although the final cut of the show was only 12 minutes long and we only saw glimpses of each character in a sketch or two. A lot more material was planned and filmed for the show focusing a lot more on each character, each having roughly three sketches. However, with the sheer lack of courage in Welsh comedy and a lack of faith in the audience it seems that a lot of the material was edited out of the final showing and we only got to see a short show. When asked about Thick Cut, Boyd was extremely enthusiastic saying "it was good to get back to acting again".

A Radio DJ is remeniscing as he talks on his radio show, he tells a story of how he once fell madly in love with a woman as he stared through a butchers shop window. He walks into the butchers shop and swears his undying love for this woman, and asks her to marry him, eventually he gets thrown out of the shop by the butcher who calls him a "maniac" for harrassing the woman...

"I waited for her to come out, she did so. I walked up to her,"

"Will you?" I said.

"Will I what?" she said.

"Will you marry me?" I said.

She stared at me for a moment and then she said "I really think you need help. I really do. I think you should see a psychiatrist".

"Is that a yes or a no?" I asked.

"If you don't push off, I'll call the police" She said. "You are ugly, you're very very ugly, an extremely unatractive man. I wouldn't marry you if I were someone else, no one would. If you don't go away right now I'm going to take my hat pin and take out both your eyes with it, I'll skewer it into your brain I swear to God I will. Because I think, you might be dangerous! Now...I'm asking you for the last time. No no, I'm telling you! Leave me alone and never bother me again or I'll kill you!"

Radio DJ: Well I can take a hint right. Anyway, that...that was almost an hour ago now. I still think of her.
